I photographed Mr. Frank Welch at his Dallas, Texas office, while listening to him talk about his fascinating life as an architect. Mr. Welch is also an accomplished fine art photographer. I was delighted to learn that we were both inspired by the same series of Time Life Books, particularly The Family of Man. This famous collection of photographs, compiled by Edward Steichen in 1955 for the Museum of Modern Art, was always on my parents’ bookshelf when I was a little girl. The iconic images of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Russell Lee, and many others, inspired me to study photojournalism. Frank Welch spent a year in Paris photographing people and street scenes with a Leica camera. His marvelous eye for composition and design is clearly apparent in both his photographs and his architecture. It was an honor to work with Frank Welch, and to visit with him about architecture, and our mutual love of photography.
“Frank Welch, FAIA, established a reputation for distinctive design after opening his first office in 1959 in west Texas. He recently completed a memoir, part of which is being published for the first time in Texas Architect Magazine’s January/February 2012 issue.“

One of things I love about being a commercial portrait photographer in Austin is that I get to meet and be inspired by interesting new people almost every day! When social media marketing guru Amanda McGuckin Hager first asked me to create a business portrait for her website and social media profiles, she wasn’t looking for a traditional headshot. Amanda is great at putting ideas into words. During one of our portrait brainstorming sessions, she sent me a list of what she wanted her photographs to convey, which included confidence, creativity, expertise and approachability. We got to work, and I got to know Amanda! She has all those qualities and more. So much of the success of a portrait depends on being who you really are, in front of the camera. The real Amanda really shines in her portraits!
